Jennifer,

I really enjoyed reading that.

It's when real people like you continue to "come out of the closet" that many others will get inspired and follow suit.

There are lots of young people (ages 16-25) where we live near Portland, Oregon, who truly grasp the implications of climate change, peak oil, and economic collapse, and are doing something about it.

This gives me hope.

I am friends with Laurel the previous poster and also signed up with Transitions Virginia nd Transitions DC. We should get together with Laurel and anyone else in the area (in Transitions) to swap stories and compare notes.
Hi Jennifer,
I read the article in the NYT. It was on the ROE2 list...(Running on Empty) a peak oil discussion list. I also live in VA. I, too, am in skill learning/gathering mode...took a permaculture class in 2009, am currently learning about medicinal herbs, and growing an expanding backyard garden. Are you aware of any peak oil interest/support groups in the NOVA area? I would be interested in finding like-minded people to share info/skills with.

I am so proud of you for not only putting yourself out there, but for actually DOING something about it! You are an inspiration to those of us mired in beige cubicleville, hoping to make a difference one heirloom tomato plant at a time. :)

Jennifer, I loved reading this. Just found you via Carolyn. I saw the NYT article today and thought, "Oh great, another chance for the Times to portray my Tribe as kooks." But you are completely right, it's important to transcend the fear of appearing insane to others. Thank you for talking to them anyway. I especially liked the last line of the article, and the fact that they included links to some other resources like The Oil Drum, Peak Moment, Transition, etc.-- hopefully lots of people who are seeking information and support will be able to find what they need because YOU were willing to stick your neck out. You are doing some amazing stuff! There's a lot of similar things I'm trying to do too, here where I live (Northampton, Mass.). I'm involved in permaculture and Transition and a lot of local food activism. I've also done a lot of thinking about the various merits of staying in place or relocating, living in intentional community, etc. Wish we could grab a coffee and swap stories.
